Open House Weekend

Open House Weekend

Sat 16th & Sun 17th September

Taking inspiration from the building’s past as a printworks for pornographic magazines, The Barge House has curated a weekend that will explore the history and culture of British erotica.

This event is part of London’s annual Open House weekend, a city-wide celebration of the buildings, places, and neighbourhoods where we live, work and play.

The Open House initiative is a simple but powerful concept: for one weekend in September hundreds of great buildings of all types and periods open their doors to all, completely for free. Each year a quarter of a million people take the opportunity to get out and get under the skin of London’s amazing architecture.

During this weekend we’ll celebrate the building’s illustrious past with a provocative programme of exhibitions, discussions and performances.

The Bar, Mezzanine and Event lounge will be transformed into gallery and performance spaces that will host stimulating talks, screenings, installations and workshops based around sex in print, celluloid and online, plus the factors that influence porn culture.

Saturday 10am – 11pm & Sunday 10am – 9pm
Bar & Kitchen open as usual – why not book a table for brunch, dinner or drinks.

Exhibitions and events are open all day and free to all on a walkin basis. You’re also able to pre-book a free ticket for five of the events, useful for those who may be travelling into the city and would like to secure a seat for the screening or workshops.

Complimentary Burleigh Pink G&T on arrival for those attending the film screening of ‘Respectable’ & the ‘Spanking Workshop’ on Saturday and ‘The Censor’ on Sunday and a free Tia & Tonic at the ‘Smut & Saucers Workshop’.

Feeld

FEELD is made by dreamers who found and inspired each other to change the world’s mindset. Ana wrote Dimo a love letter, where she expressed her fantasies and the fear from them. Dimo was both hurt and inspired—Ana blamed her own beautiful mind for crossing a limit of ‘the norm’—one carved carefully for decades by society, media, entertainment. So Dimo wrote a letter back, creating Feeld—the space where people like him and Ana can go and find like-minded humans, ones exploring their minds, curiosities and pleasures. Feeld is on a mission to open up people’s minds. We show the world that there is more to love and pleasure than the norm, and that once you cross its limits, nothing bad will happen. Discover the clarity and weightlessness of complete trust in yourself, in your partner, in your pleasure journey. https://feeld.co

TOO UGLY FOR WORDS
The conversation goes something like this:
Friend… Oh he’s just a fucking CUNT…
Me…I hate that you use the word Cunt in that way. Cunt is a good thing…Cunt is a friendly word for my vagina..its a soft…sexy…served me well sort of word….I don’t like that you use it in a derogatory abusive way.
Friend…oh it doesn’t mean anything..its just a word…like using Dick ..
Me…No its not like using Dick… when Cunt is used as a casual swear word its not alone. It has a tidal wave of other misogynistic words behind it…yes a word is a word is a word but when there are so many so often over so many years they burn into your very being and add up to make you feel WRONG

So thats how the table writing started …all the hateful hurtful words I have ever been called as woman.

I burned the first words into the wood but then other women came to the table and wrote their words too. Ugly old bag…toxic twat…stupid cunting whore…hysterical bitch..bunny boiler…witch…dirty slut..minging ho.

There seems no end of words and no end of women to write them.

We sit around the table and write and tell stories about the words and compare notes and realise that it wasn’t us that were ‘wrong/bad/ugly/stupid/fat/wrong again … its just the drip drip drip of perpetual sexist crap language that we have to hear every day of our lives. You can laugh at the infantile stupidity of the separate words and phrases – school room nonsense…bright poisonous beads on a Xmas tree…. but then when you see them all together its overwhelming and depressing and a post feminist society is still a long way off.

But then you remind each other there are tricky ways to resist – turn it on its head, glorify it, embroider, embellish and laugh in defiance.

Glorify with menace! Resist in Perpetuity!

REYNOLDS & ROSE

REYNOLDS & ROSE
Reynolds and Rose Both artists hail from a musical as well as artistic background. The last ten years they have collaborated on film scores, art exhibitions, record artwork and animated videos. Their work has been shown in the Neue gallery New York and the Getty Museum. Edward Rose is best known for his community Art Murals, and Animated music videos and Nick Reynolds as a member of the group Alabama 3 (Sopranos Theme tune] and the UK’s premier creator of Death Masks.

Exhibition: JAPORNISM Erotic Contemporientalism, re-interpreting traditional Japanese Ukiyo-e Shunga. Ukiyo-e is a genre of Japanese art which flourished between the 17th and 19th centuries, whilst Shunga is Japanese for ‘Erotic Art’. Ukiyo-e was central to forming the West’s perception of Japanese art in the late 19th century–especially the landscapes of Hokusai and Hiroshige. From the 1870s Japonism became a prominent trend and had a strong influence on the early Impressionists such as Degas, Manet, and Monet, as well as Post-Impressionists such as van Gogh and Art Nouveau artists such as Toulouse-Lautrec.

DIRTY FAN MALE
Jonny Trunk and Duncan Wisbey have stumbled upon a comedy goldmine with this musical presentation of fan letters written to British soft-porn stars. The mail was collected by Trunk, who ran a fanclub for his glamour-model sister. The music, and the characterful voices in which the correspondence is read, are Wisbey’s. As directed by Alan Cox, their combination of squalid private fantasies and very actorly recital is often sublimely funny.

It’s the detail amid the filth that’s delicious, conjuring up surprisingly differentiated personalities. There’s the fan with the over-enthusiastic punctuation, or the one whose scatological missives end with a polite: “Yours sincerely … ” There are the frustrated romantics (“I would also take you horse-riding and to see Barry White”) and those whose fantasies are the more bizarre for not being remotely sexual.

The comic juxtapositions and turns of phrase are gloriously idiosyncratic. “Charmaine, I have just sent £15 for your pussy hair. But I forgot to send my address.” What turns this into gold is the contrast between Trunk’s low-key narration and Wisbey’s flamboyant vocal and musical skills. The latter impersonates Michael Caine, Kenneth Williams and Cary Grant to bring the fanmail to life, to the keyboard accompaniment of some saucy seaside backing track or, for the climax, a rhapsodic Handel-esque aria. Seriously arousing stuff.  – From Brian Logan’s review in The Guardian

Mary Millington Respectable Review
MARY MILLINGTON – RESPECTABLE

RESPECTABLE – THE MARY MILLINGTON STORY
In the 1970s there was a pretty English girl-next-door whose rise to the top was meteoric, controversial and scandalous. Her name was Mary Millington, Britain’s only genuine sex superstar. She became the star of ‘Come Play with Me’, which ran continuously at one London cinema for four years, and is still the longest-running movie in British cinema history.

As the most recognisable adult star in Britain, for the past decade Mary had devoted herself to a tireless campaign for more liberal pornography laws, and for a freer debate on the expression of female sexuality.

But Mary’s sexual bravado hid a darker side. She fought crippling insecurity and struggled to find her voice in a tumultuous decade of social change. Persecuted by the authorities and threatened with a spell in prison, Mary found herself addicted to drugs. Tortured by self-doubt, she died at the height of her fame in August 1979. She was just 33. For the very first time, Simon Sheridan’s enthralling documentary ‘Respectable The Mary Millington Story’ reveals the truth behind a British icon and speaks to those who knew her best, including her family, former lovers and co-stars. Actor Dexter Fletcher narrates a story stranger than any fiction of lost innocence, fame, fortune and tragedy. This is the shocking, untold, true story of 1970s rebellion, painted against a backdrop of disco, politics and porn.

The Barge House has a special association with this story in that the site used to be one of the print factories where David Sullivan’s porn mags were printed. Mary was David Sullivan’s girlfriend and her popularity spurred sales of his magazines. The film contains interviews with key people in her life, including David Sullivan and also collates fantastic historic footage of the porn print works, footage of old Soho and the surrounding area, perfectly capturing an era that now barely exists.

MATTHEW GLAMORRE
SCISM is the new music and live AV project from the godfather of London Underground Matthew Glamorre. The mission is to explore polarities within politics, religion and identity through ‘living montage’.

Video, images, audio and text from opposing stand points are curated, edited, over layed and manipulated live onstage by Glamorre & guest digital, sound and multi media artists.

The evolving collage is projected over and around live performance, music and spoken word. THE CENSOR – ANTHONY NEILSON
As a part of our Open House weekend we are delighted to announce an afternoon reading of Anthony Neilson’s play, The Censor. First performed at the Red Room, before a West End transfer to the Royal Court at the Duke of York’s, Anthony Neilson’s controversial play tells a tender tale in graphic scenes, challenging the audience to see beyond the images themselves, to a deeper truth, about interaction, honesty and affection.

Shirley Fontaine, director, visionary, pornographer, meets with Frank, a censor whose job it is to decide what cuts would make her latest work acceptable for general release. On the face of it, her film is comprised solely of a litany of sex scenes: but, in a series of tête-à-têtes, she attempts to make the timid and tentative Frank see the arc of a relationship in her movie, one she believes to be an important record of sex as communication, and, more importantly, a work of art.

The reading will be read by Anthony Neilson himself followed by a Q&A hosted by Roxanana Silber – Artistic Director, Birmingham Rep.

Jerry Barnett Porn Panic
JERRY BARNETT

JERRY BARNETT
Jerry had been a political activist since first attending anti-racism protests as a teenager in the late-70s. He began working as a software engineer and technical consultant in the mid-80s, and for a decade worked for a number of leading technology brands. When, in the mid-1990s, the worldwide web changed the face of computing, he saw an opportunity to set up a web software business.

Seemingly inevitably, he began to work for the online adult entertainment industry, which represented the largest and most profitable online business at the time. His customers included well known industry names such as Private and Playboy TV. He later set up his own pay-per-view service, Strictly Broadband – in its day, this became Britain’s “Netflix of pornography”. The online adult industry peaked in 2007, and went into steep decline following the arrival of the free content model.

As a participant in adult entertainment, Jerry saw first-hand how the British censorship state, aided by morality campaigners, was trying to regain control of a medium that reduced their power, influence and financial gain. The UK is the most censored society in Europe, but censorship laws designed for a world of cinema, TV and video no longer worked in the digital age, and vested interests were determined to seize back their power. He became chairman of the Adult Industry Trade Association (AITA), and a member of the Policy Council of US-based industry body, IFFOR (the International Foundation for Online Responsibility).

After closing his business in 2012, he founded the Sex & Censorship campaign, with the aims of countering misinformation about sexual expression in the media, opposing the drive towards more state censorship and defending sexual freedom. He believes that the dangerous drive towards censorship is really not about porn: that just makes for a convenient excuse.
